Between San José and Guanacaste: Crocodile Viewing on the Tarcoles River
Desafío Adventure Company is always innovating, creating exciting ways to enjoy tours on the way to your next destination. That's why we've introduced the Desafío Adventure Connection, with a stop at the Tarcoles River for a Crocodile Safari Boat tour, en route from the lush rainforests of San José to the stunning beaches of Guanacaste.
This stop is the perfect way to break up the 5.5-hour drive, giving you a chance to witness incredible wildlife, including the famous 20-foot American crocodiles that call the Carara Biological Reserve home. After the safari, you'll enjoy a delicious lunch.
Keep an eye out for the rare Scarlet Macaw, along with over 50 other bird species, and don’t miss the "Jesus Christ Lizards" that dash across the water – a favorite among children.
The Tarcoles River, formed by the Río Virilla and Río Grande, flows southwest to the Pacific Ocean near Jacó’s Herradura Beach. During the two-hour boat tour through the river and Guacalillo mangroves, your bilingual guide will point out elusive wildlife, making this an unforgettable, family-friendly experience in one of Costa Rica’s most diverse ecosystems. You’ll see more crocodiles here than anywhere else!
